Modern wind turbines capture the wind in the same way that traditional windmills used to, except that instead of turning grindstones or water pumps the rotor is used to turn a generator that produces electricity.
The electricity is delivered into the same electricity grid that is used to supply electricity to homes and businesses throughout the UK.

How much energy does the wind turbine produce?
Over a year the output of the Bankdale wind turbine will normally be enough to meet the electricity needs of around 300 average UK households. Even though occasionally the wind doesn’t blow a typical wind turbine will be generating for around 70% of the time.
The Bankdale turbine is located near the Cumbrian village of Wreay. It is sited on land owned by a local farmer who benefits from the additional income from selling the electricity generated to the national grid.
